Prospect Watch: James Hicks

Might Be Turning a Corner

Pitching prospects donโ€™t always move in straight lines. Some stumble, reset, and then reintroduce themselves in a big way.ย  James Hicksย may be doing exactly that, and his performance in theย 2025 Arizona Fall Leagueย has put him back in the spotlight.

Early Signs of Promise

Hicks first showed up in pro ball inย 2023ย in the Florida Complex League. In a handful of appearances, he posted aย 1.59 ERA, limiting hard contact and showing the ability to keep hitters uncomfortable. It was a small sample, but it hinted at a pitcher with legitimate upside.

A Challenging Climb in 2024 and 2025

The organization pushed Hicks aggressively inย 2024, moving him acrossย three levels, ending inย Double-A. Over the full season, he logged more thanย 100 inningsย and struck outย 115 hitters, proving he has bat-missing stuff.

The results, however, were uneven, especially at Double-A, where more advanced hitters punished mistakes. That trend continued intoย 2025, as Hicks struggled to find consistency over 10 Double-A starts. His ERA remained high, and home runs were an issue.

For many pitchers, Double-A is where weaknesses get exposed. For Hicks, it became a learning experience.

A Statement Performance in the Arizona Fall League

Then came the Arizona Fall League, and everything looked different.

Facing some of the best prospects in baseball, Hicks was dominant. Inย four appearances (two starts), he threwย 14 scoreless innings, allowing justย six hits. He struck outย 19 batters, walked onlyย two, and posted an eye-openingย 0.57 WHIP. Opponents hit justย .130ย against him.

Thatโ€™s about as strong as it gets. The AFL is filled with top young hitters, and Hicks didnโ€™t just survive – he controlled games.

What Changed?

While exact adjustments arenโ€™t always public, the results suggest improved command and sharper execution. He attacked hitters, avoided big mistakes, and finished at-bats, things that had been inconsistent during the regular season.

Just as important, he did it against elite competition.

What Comes Next?

The Fall League performance doesnโ€™t erase earlier struggles, but it absolutely matters. It shows Hicks can translate his raw stuff into results when everything is synced up. That opens multiple paths forward, either as a refined starter or a high-impact bullpen arm.

Final Thoughts

James Hicksโ€™ story is a reminder that development isnโ€™t linear, especially for pitchers. After a tough stretch at Double-A, he used the Arizona Fall League as a reset and made a strong case that his best baseball may still be ahead of him.

If he carries even part of that momentum into next season, he could quickly change the conversation around his future.
