Powering His Way Up the Piratesโ System
The Pittsburgh Pirates have quietly developed a growing collection of power bats in their farm system, andย Esmerlyn Valdezย is rapidly forcing his way into that conversation. After showing flashes of raw pop in 2024, Valdez took a significant step forward in 2025, establishing himself as one of the organizationโs most intriguing offensive prospects.
From Raw Power to Real Production
Valdezโs 2024 season at Low-A Bradenton offered an early glimpse of his upside. While his .226 batting average didnโt jump off the page, a deeper look revealed a hitter with advanced patience and legitimate power. He sluggedย 22 home runs in 107 games and posted a strongย .352 on-base percentage, showing a willingness to work counts and take walks even as he adjusted to full-season ball.
That foundation paid off in a big way in 2025.
Across two levels, Valdez hitย .286/.376/.520ย withย 26 home runsย andย 86 RBIย in 123 games, dramatically improving his contact quality while maintaining his power output. The most impressive stretch came at High-A Greensboro, where he dominated pitching with aย .303 average and a .592 slugging percentage, launching 20 home runs in just 72 games.
Handling the Jump to Double-A
Promoted to Double-A Altoona midseason, Valdez faced more advanced pitching and predictably saw his numbers level out. Still, his performance was encouraging. He continued to get on base at a strong clip (.363 OBP), showed power to the gaps, and maintained the plate discipline that has become a defining part of his profile. For a 21-year-old facing Double-A arms for the first time, it was a solid adjustment period rather than a setback.
Statement Performance in the Arizona Fall League
If there were any doubts about Valdezโs offensive ceiling, his time in the Arizona Fall League helped quiet them. In a small but eye-catching sample, he posted aย 1.355 OPSย withย eight home runsย against a league filled with upper-level prospects. While AFL numbers should always be taken with caution, the performance reinforced the idea that Valdezโs power can play against high-quality pitching.
What Makes Valdez Interesting
Valdez stands out for more than just his home run totals. He consistently posts strong walk rates, suggesting an approach that can translate as he moves closer to the majors. The strikeouts remain part of his game, and the hit tool will ultimately determine whether he becomes an everyday contributor or a more specialized power bat. Still, players with patience and power tend to get opportunities, and Valdez is earning his.
Looking Ahead
With Double-A experience already under his belt and momentum from a breakout year, Valdez enters the next phase of his development firmly on the radar. If he continues to refine his contact against upper-level pitching, he could push himself into the Piratesโ near-term plans.
At the very least, Esmerlyn Valdez has transformed from a raw slugger into a legitimate prospect to watch, and one whose power could make an impact in Pittsburgh sooner rather than later.
