How Players Move Through the System

Player movement in baseball is often driven more by roster rules than by performance.  Options, waivers, and the 40-man roster give teams control over players.  It says when players are promoted, sent down, exposed to other clubs, or removed from the organization entirely.

These mechanisms quietly shape careers.  They determine who gets opportunities, who becomes expendable, and how long teams can retain control over a player’s rights.  Understanding roster rules shows that a player’s path is guided as much by timing and eligibility as it is by talent.
